“The Wealthy Barber” – Review and Anniversary Giveaway

On the 2nd March 2012, Odd Cents will be six months old, and to celebrate, I’m having an anniversary giveaway!!!

In early January I made a post on the Yakezie forums asking for suggestions on some blog giveaways. I got some great ideas and immediately made a decision to tackle one of them. One of the ideas was to do a book giveaway and to contact the author to see if he/ she would sponsor the giveaway. So suggested, so done.

I’m proud to announce that David Chilton, author of the classic personal finance book The Wealthy Barber has graciously sponsored this giveaway. This is the first personal finance book that I’ve ever read and it was recommended by a pension analyst who gave a presentation at my job.

This review will be brief, because I do not want to overshadow the giveaway aspect of this post or spoil it for the lucky winner. But I promise that I will do several reviews over a few weeks after the giveaway is closed.

The book consists of ten chapters which go through a series of key personal finance teachings presented by a wise barber named Roy. Roy shares a wealth of information including popular topics like saving, planning for retirement, planning for death, purchasing real estate, investing and taxes.

My favourite lesson in the entire book is the “Ten Percent Solution”. This made such an impact on me, that I decided to implement it now. I’m not waiting until next month or the next two months, I’m doing it now. I shifted around my budget and made sure that I was practicing this very important saving tactic.

Some of the stuff in the book went over my head, but I did not mind. This was mainly because I’m from the Caribbean, and some of the concepts do not apply to this region. But, I can assure you that everyone can take a little piece of this book and apply it their lives.

To enter the anniversary giveaway, you must do ALL of the following:

  1. Like the Odd Cents Facebook page.
  2. Leave a comment on this post, stating why you want to win this book.

Deadline for entries is the 1st March 2012. The winner will be announced 2nd March 2012. Random.org will be used to choose the winner. Good luck!
