How to Decorate With Paint

One of the best budget home décor ideas that I’ve come across is to decorate with paint. This is an inexpensive way to dramatically alter how a room looks. When it comes to painting there are several options available. You can paint the walls of the room, the ceiling, the floor and the furniture or a combination on these. In this quick guide on how to decorate with paint, I introduce you to one of the more popular cheap DIY home décor projects.

I’ve done it before. I changed the colour of my bathroom which resulted in a relaxing ambiance complemented by the right accents and bathroom furniture and fittings. In addition to painting the walls and the roof, I painted the vanity and I have plans of spray painting the towel rack and a storage caddy at a later date. I played it safe with this room by using one colour for the walls and another for the roof. The paint was applied using a brush, even though I think a roller might have done the job a bit faster. I also played it safe and I did not experiment with any paint effects.

For those who are adventurous, there are several types of paint effects that you can try. Rag rolling, sponging and marbling are some of the more popular decorative painting techniques. Rag rolling is a technique which uses a rag to create a design on your surface. Using different types of fabric as rags can create different textures which can be emphasized by using different colours. Sponging is a technique used to create soft textures on surfaces. Paint is applied using either a sea sponge or synthetic sponge. Marbling can be done using a feather to create the marbling effect. Other decorative techniques include colour washing and combing.

If you’ve decided to play it safe and stick to basic painting, you can create a different effect by painting the room in different colours. One popular technique is to paint an accent wall. The accent wall can be a few shades lighter or darker than the dominant shade in your room. However, many people choose to paint the accent wall a darker colour which creates a focal point. Another technique is to paint a chair rail, which is basically painting the top and bottom halves of the wall in different colours. Some other ideas are painting stripes, borders and using stencils to put designs on the wall
