Easy Black Bean Burger Recipe

I remember when I first found this black bean burger recipe. I was looking for budget lunch recipes which were different, easy to prepare and tasty. I’m not a vegetarian, but sometimes I get the urge to avoid meat. I actually found several recipes on the Internet and I put together this one based on what I had at home and tweaked it to my liking.

Easy Black Bean Burger Recipe

This easy black bean burger recipe, is one of those affordable recipes that can be made using items from your cupboard. The only thing I bought for this recipe were the black beans, and they were pretty cheap. All of the other ingredients I already had at home.

You will need:

  • 1 16 oz. can of black beans
  • 1 sweet pepper, chopped finely
  • 2 onions, chopped finely
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped finely
  • Chopped spring onions
  • Sprinkle of salt
  • Sprinkle of black pepper
  • Spices (I like to use paprika and curry)
  • Pepper sauce ( optional)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs for coating
  • Olive oil for frying
  • Toppings of your choice (I stick with lettuce, onion and salad dressing)
  • Hamburger buns

Directions:

Drain your black beans and pat them as dry as possible. (I’ve found that leaving traces of liquid can make your burgers fall apart when frying.) Mash your beans with a fork or other utensil until they form a thick paste.

Add your sweet pepper, onions, garlic and spring onions to the mashed beans and mix well. Add the salt, black pepper and spices until the taste is to your liking. I usually add a dash of pepper sauce to give the burgers a little kick.

Add your breadcrumbs to your mixture until it holds together. Divide the mixture into six burgers.

Wrap your burgers in clear plastic wrap and then put them in the freezer for about least 30 minutes to firm up.

Heat the olive oil in a pan over low to medium heat. Place the burgers in a single layer and cook for about 4 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown.

Place your burgers on a plate with a paper towel to absorb some of the oil.

Transfer your burgers to the hamburger buns and top with your chosen garnishes. If you’re taking your burgers to work, you should add your garnishes when you are ready to eat.
