I read a really good article on MSN Money written by Brandon Ballenger of Money Talks News. This article, which looked at eight weird ways to make money, got me thinking about 8 “not so weird” ways to make money in Barbados.
I’m a firm believer in the creation of a side-hustle, but the question that I’m always asked is “what to do”? If you have a talent, a bit of time for training, the will to succeed and of course a niche that is in demand, you are practically set.
Ways to Make Money in Barbados
Here are a few side hustle ideas that will work well in Barbados:
- Plumbing – Installation of plumbing fixtures; Repairs and maintenance
- Carpentry/ Joinery – Home and furniture building; Home and furniture repairs
- Photography – Online (e.g. Photo galleries); Print (e.g. newspapers, magazines, books, flyers etc.)
- Jewellery-Making – Boutiques and shops; Online stores like Etsy, Amazon and Ebay
- Baby-sitting – Evenings; Week-ends; Bank holidays
- Cosmetology – Hair; Nails (Manicures and Pedicures); Facials; Skin Care
- Catering – Parties; Special events
- Teaching – Tutoring in Math, English etc.
One characteristic that these eight examples have in common is that that there is a need for them. Plumbing and carpentry are always in demand thanks to home building and home repairs. Photography has become a highly sought after past-time and because we live in such a visual word, it’s a strong area. Jewellery-making and jewellery design are also popular because unique and creative pieces are in high demand.
Baby-sitting can come in handy for parents who have to be out late, work on weekends and have plans other days. Cosmetology is also a safe bet because people pay close attention to their outward appearance. And, teaching classes can be beneficial to both children and adults and there are many areas you can get into.
My advice is to look for a trade school (in Barbados we have the Barbados Vocational Training Board and The Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic ) and sign up for a short course. The term spending money to make money is applicable here and well worth it. You’re gaining an education with hopes of bringing in a second income.
If you are definitely thinking about a side-hustle, I would advise you to take it very seriously. You should always be professional at all times and treat your customers as you would like to be treated – with respect!
