How To Make Fabric Covered Button Earrings

It’s Saturday and I was feeling creative, so I decided to make some fabric covered button earrings! This is something that I’ve always to do. A few months ago, my mother was throwing out some old career suits and I decided to save the covered buttons with the intention of making earrings someday.

And that someday was today! Here’s what I used:

  1. Fabric Covered Buttons ( Two pairs – black and pink)
  2. Two Pairs of Silver Plated Earring Pads with Ear Nuts *
  3. Acrylic/ Fabric Paints *– I used blue, yellow, black, white and purple acrylic paints
  4. Paint Brush or Toothpick
  5. Glue gun and glue sticks or Crazy Glue (please be careful when using these items)
  6. Tissue to clean your paint brush or toothpick between paints

How I Made Fabric Covered Button Earrings

The steps are pretty simple to make. Here’s what I did.

1. I removed the pieces of wire from the backs of the buttons using a beading pliers. But if you don’t have one, any pliers could work. It can be a bit hard to remove them, so be careful how you hold the items. I learnt the hard way and received a scratch

2. I put some glue on the earring pad and stuck it to the back of the button and let it set for a  minute or two. I have not used a glue gun in a very long time!

3. Time to paint! I decided to paint the Barbados flag on the black pair and a random flower on the pink pair. I used a toothpick, because I did not have a fine enough paint brush.

4. I let the designs dry for a couple minutes, and then I went over them again. I found that when I used the acrylic paint, the fabric sucked it up. Next time I will try fabric paints.

5. I added the final details and I was finished!

Now you know how to make fabric-covered button earrings! These earrings probably took me about ten minutes to make, including drying time between touch-ups.

Alternatively, you could buy a craft cover button kit* and make your own buttons using your favourite fabric.
